Setting Maximum Purchase Limits Per Order (Max Quantity Per Cart)

Prevent bulk buying and ensure fair distribution by limiting the number of items a customer can add to a single cart.

Updated over a week ago

The Per Cart Limit feature allows you to control the maximum quantity of a specific variant a customer can purchase in a single transaction. This is a powerful tool for high-demand launches, preventing resellers from "clearing the shelves" and ensuring more customers have a chance to buy your products.

1. When to use Per-Order Limits

  • Preventing Resellers: Stop bulk buyers from purchasing your entire inventory to flip on other marketplaces.

  • Fair Distribution: Ensure that limited-edition or high-demand preorder items are distributed among as many customers as possible.

  • Shipping Constraints: Manage shipping costs or logistics if certain items are difficult to ship in large quantities.

2. How to Set a "Max cart quantity" Limit

You can set these limits at the individual variant level.

  1. Open the offer that includes the product you want to set limit for and click Add limit to open Maximum sales limit modal.

  2. Find the product and variant you wish to restrict (e.g., Maven Lounge Chair - Teal).

  3. Locate the column labeled Max cart quantity.

  4. Enter the maximum number of units allowed per order.

    • Example: Entering 2 means a customer can purchase 1 or 2 units, but will be blocked if they try to add a 3rd to their cart.

  5. Click Save.

3. How it Works for the Customer

When a limit is active, the app monitors the cart quantity:

  • Validation: If a customer attempts to add more than the allowed limit to their cart, the app will prevent the action.

  • Customer Notification: The customer will see a message (e.g., "You can only add up to 2 of 'ADIDAS| CLASSIX BACKPACK'") and the item can't be added to the cart.

Note: Due to Shopify limitations this message can not be customized.

Troubleshooting & FAQ

Is the limit per product or per variant?
The limit is per variant. For example, you can allow a customer to buy 5 "Maroon" beds but only 2 "Forrest Green" beds.

Does this limit prevent a customer from placing two separate orders?
This feature limits the quantity per transaction (per cart).

Can I set a "Max cart quantity" limit without a "Total Limit"?
Yes! You can leave the "Total Limit" field empty. This allows you to sell an unlimited amount of stock overall, while still ensuring that no single order exceeds your per-cart maximum.

How do I disable the limit?
Simply open the modal, delete the number in the Max cart quantity box for that variant so it is empty, and click Save.
