How Wishlist works

What is Notify Me Wishlist feature and how does it work

This article explains how customers interact with the Wishlist feature on your storefront, where their Wishlist is stored, and what controls you have over who can use it.

On a product page

When the Wishlist module is active and your Notify Me! App Embed is on, a heart-shaped Add to Wishlist button appears on each product page. The customer clicks the heart to save the product. A short confirmation toast appears, and the heart switches to its active (filled-in) state.

To remove a product, the customer clicks the heart again.

The floating "My Wishlist" button

A floating My Wishlist button is anchored to the side of your storefront pages. Clicking it opens the Wishlist drawer, which lists every saved product. From the drawer, customers can return to a product page, add the item to cart, or remove it from their Wishlist.

The floating button cannot be hidden, but its position, color, and label are fully customizable. See How to Customize the Floating "My Wishlist" Button.

Logged-in customers and guests

You choose who can use the Wishlist:

  • All customers (including guests). Any visitor can save products. Guest Wishlists are stored in the customer's browser and merge with their account if they later sign in.

  • Logged-in customers only. Only signed-in customers can save products. Guests see a prompt to log in or create an account first.

Set this in WishlistSettings under Customer access. For trade-offs between the two options, see How to Configure Wishlist Customer Access.

Where the Wishlist is stored

For logged-in customers, the Wishlist is saved to their customer account on your Shopify store and persists across devices and sessions. They see the same Wishlist whether they sign in on their phone, laptop, or any other device.

For guests, the Wishlist is stored locally in the browser. If a guest clears their cookies or uses a different browser or device, their saved items won't appear there. If a guest later signs in to an account, their local Wishlist automatically merges into their account-based one.

What you see inside the app

Inside Notify Me!, you can see:

  • Wishlist products: which products are saved most often, and by how many shoppers.

  • Wishlists: individual customer wishlists and the products on each.

  • Reports: trends in saved products and customer behavior.

See Understanding Wishlist Reports for what each report shows.

Frequently asked questions

  • Does the customer need to create an account to use the Wishlist?
Not necessarily. If you allow guests, anyone can save items. If you restrict access to logged-in customers only, guests see a sign-in prompt first.

  • Can a customer transfer their Wishlist between devices?
Logged-in customers automatically have their Wishlist sync across devices. Guests don't, since their Wishlist is stored in the browser.

  • Does the Wishlist persist if a customer clears their cookies?
For logged-in customers, yes. For guests, no.

  • Can I send a notification when a saved product comes back in stock?
Personalized Wishlist notifications are on the roadmap and not currently available. For restock alerts today, use the Back in Stock module separately.
