Before you start

Enable the privacy policy field

  1. From your Notify Me! dashboard, navigate to Back in stockWidgetsSubscriber form.

  2. In the right-hand sidebar, scroll down to the bottom of the field list. You'll see Privacy policy listed below Shopify contact.

  1. Click the eye icon next to Privacy policy to toggle the field on. The icon changes to indicate the field is now visible, and the privacy policy text appears immediately in the widget preview.

  2. Click the chevron (>) next to Privacy policy to open the configuration sub-menu.

Configure your privacy policy text

Once inside the Privacy policy sub-menu, you'll see four fields to customize:

  1. In the Privacy policy text field, write your legal disclaimer message. This is the text your customers will see on the subscriber form.

The default text is: I have read and agree to the {{privacy_policy_url_text}}.

You can write any message you like. To insert the clickable privacy policy link, use the {{privacy_policy_url_text}} variable anywhere in your text. For example:

    1. I have read and agree to the {{privacy_policy_url_text}}.

    2. By subscribing, you accept our {{privacy_policy_url_text}} and terms of service.

Click the Privacy policy URL text pill below the text area to auto-insert the {{privacy_policy_url_text}} variable at your cursor position. This prevents typos and ensures the variable syntax is correct.

  2. In the Privacy policy URL text field, enter the label that will appear as the clickable link text. The default is Privacy Policy. You could change this to something like privacy policy, data protection policy, or whatever fits your store's language.

  3. In the Privacy policy URL field, enter the full URL of your store's privacy policy page (e.g., https://yourstore.com/policies/privacy-policy). This is where customers will be directed when they click the link.

  4. Optionally, edit the Privacy policy error message field. This is the validation message shown if a customer tries to submit the form without accepting the privacy policy checkbox. The default is: You must accept our privacy policy.

  5. Click the back arrow at the top of the sub-menu to return to the main Subscriber form field list.

How it appears to your customers

Once enabled, the privacy policy appears as a checkbox with your custom text at the bottom of the subscriber form modal, just above the Notify Me When Available button. The {{privacy_policy_url_text}} variable is replaced by your chosen link text (e.g., "Privacy Policy") and styled as a clickable hyperlink.

Important: If a customer tries to submit the form without checking the privacy policy box, they'll see your configured error message and the form will not submit until they accept.

Tips and best practices

  1. Keep your legal text short — one or two sentences is ideal. Long paragraphs can push the form content down, especially on mobile devices, making the experience feel cluttered.

  2. Always test the link after saving. Open your store in a new browser tab, find an out-of-stock product, and click through the subscriber form to confirm the privacy policy link opens correctly and points to the right page.

  3. If you sell internationally, consider whether your privacy policy page covers the relevant regulations for your customer base (GDPR for EU customers, TCPA for US SMS subscribers, etc.). The privacy policy field gives you the mechanism to link to your policy — but the content of that policy is up to you.
