Shoppers have the right to ask a store to delete their personal data. When that happens, Notify Me! erases that customer's contact details everywhere they appear in the app. The request itself stays in your reports — only the person's identity is removed. This article explains what you'll see and what changes.
What the "Redacted" badge means
Wherever a customer's email or phone would normally appear, you'll see Contact details erased with a Redacted badge next to it. Hovering the badge explains why.
The customer's name is erased as well, so nothing identifying is left on the row. This is permanent — the details are replaced, not hidden, so they can't be restored later.
You don't need to configure anything. This happens automatically for every store, and it's how Notify Me! meets its data-protection obligations as a Shopify app.
These requests still count
This is the part most merchants ask about. A redacted request still counts in your reports, statistics and plan usage, exactly like any other request.
That's deliberate. The fact that someone wanted a product back in stock is still real, useful demand — it's the identity attached to it that had to go. If a redacted row still counts toward your plan limit, that's working as intended.
Some actions are switched off
Anything that needs the customer's contact details can no longer run, so those controls are disabled rather than hidden — with a note explaining why.
Sending a notification to a redacted customer is blocked.
Resend to all still sends to everyone you can reach, and tells you how many were skipped.
The Shopify order link no longer opens, because the order reference was erased along with the customer's data.
We leave the buttons visible on purpose, so it's clear why something is unavailable instead of leaving you hunting for a control that vanished.
It applies everywhere, not just back-in-stock
The same treatment appears across pre-orders, wishlists and their reports.
A different case: a store that removes the app
Don't confuse the above with what happens when a store removes Notify Me! entirely. In that case, once the 30-day window passes, that installation's customer data is erased and hidden completely — those records don't appear in reports and don't count anywhere.
If that store later reinstalls, the app starts fresh: empty reports, usage back to zero. Nothing from the previous installation is shown or counted.
So the short version: a customer's deletion request leaves the row visible but anonymous and still counted; removing the app removes the data entirely.
Common questions
A row says Redacted but still uses my plan quota — is that a bug? No. The request counts; only the customer's identity was erased.
Can I get the details back? No. They're permanently replaced, so there's nothing to recover.
Why is the resend button greyed out? The customer's contact details were erased, so there's no address left to send to.
Older rows show Redacted too — why? Requests redacted before this change display the same way, so your reports are consistent throughout.
