Applying Low Stock Alert to Specific Products

This article walks you through applying Low Stock Alerts to specific products.

Updated this week

The Low Stock Alert feature gives you the flexibility to highlight urgency on specific inventory items. This allows you to drive conversions on high-demand or fast-moving products, enhance marketing strategies, and create a sense of scarcity where it matters most.

Why Apply Low Stock Alerts Selectively?

  1. Target Popular Items
Some products consistently sell out faster than others. Applying Low Stock Alerts to these items can nudge customers to act quickly and complete their purchase before the item goes out of stock.

  2. Avoid Alert Fatigue
Not every product benefits from scarcity messaging. Using alerts selectively ensures you only highlight relevant products — preventing unnecessary distractions and keeping the store experience clean and intentional.

  3. Boost Seasonal or Limited-Edition Campaigns
Scarcity works especially well for limited-edition, seasonal, or event-based products. Highlighting their low stock status reinforces exclusivity and urgency, often leading to higher conversion rates.

How to Apply Low Stock Alerts to Specific Products

  1. Navigate to the Low Stock Section
Open the Notify Me! app and go to the Low Stock section from the sidebar.

  2. Access Settings
Click on the Settings button within the Low Stock tab to access alert configuration options.

  3. Choose ‘Applies To’ Setting
Within the settings page, locate the ‘Applies To’ dropdown. You’ll see two main options:

    • All in-stock products: Applies low stock alerts across your entire inventory.

    • All in-stock products, except any items from…: Lets you manually exclude specific products from showing alerts.

  4. Excluding Specific Products
To exclude particular items from receiving alerts:

    • Choose the second option in the ‘Applies To’ dropdown.

    • Manually add the product(s) you wish to exclude.

    • These products will remain unaffected even when stock levels drop.

  5. Setting Product-Specific Thresholds
If you want to apply alerts only to specific products, you can:

    • Adjust the stock threshold per product based on sales velocity or strategic importance.

    • For instance, set the threshold to “3” for fast sellers, so alerts show when fewer than 3 units remain.

  6. Save Your Settings
This gives you granular control and allows the alert to trigger only when it matters. After configuring the products and thresholds, click Save.

The Low Stock widget will automatically activate when an item’s quantity drops below the defined threshold.

Setting Numeric Thresholds

You can define your numeric thresholds in the Low Stock settings. Examples:

  • Set threshold to 1 to show a warning when just one unit remains.

  • Set threshold to 3 to trigger alerts when the stock is below 3.

This makes it easy to customize urgency based on product popularity or restocking cycles.

Customizing the Widget Appearance

You can fully adjust the Low Stock widget to match your brand’s visual identity:

  • Color: Match the widget with your store’s color palette.

  • Font style and size: Improve readability and match your store’s typography.

  • Widget size and position: Ensure visibility without interfering with other on-page elements.

  • Simplified Messaging: Choose to display a minimal "Low Stock" message without revealing exact inventory counts — ideal for clean design and subtle urgency.

Subscription Requirements

The Low Stock Alert feature, including product-level customization and threshold settings, is available to users on the Essentials plan or higher.

  • Essentials users also receive a 7-day free trial to test the feature.

  • Upgrading unlocks advanced tracking, threshold control, and appearance customization tools.

Customizable Triggers for Each Product

You can assign individual stock thresholds per product, allowing the alert to align with unique sales patterns and business logic. For example:

  • A best-seller might show alerts at 5 units

  • A slow-moving product might skip alerts entirely

This level of control helps you tailor urgency without relying on one-size-fits-all settings.
