Restock notifications not sending due to offline or unfulfillable locations

Understand how Shopify location settings impact Notify Me alerts and how to resolve notification issues

Updated today

If you restock a product and Notify Me doesn’t send restock notifications, the issue may be that the inventory was added to a location that isn’t eligible to trigger alerts. This article explains how location settings affect restock behavior, how to identify the issue, and what to do to resolve it.

Why restock alerts depend on location settings

Notify Me only sends restock alerts when a product is available at a location that can fulfill online orders. If inventory is added only to offline or non-fulfillable locations, the product remains “out of stock” from Notify Me’s perspective - even if inventory appears in your Shopify admin.

This ensures that customers only receive alerts when the product is actually available for purchase online.

Example:
You restock 10 units of a product at a retail store location that isn’t enabled for online fulfillment. Shopify considers the product in stock, but Notify Me won’t send alerts until inventory is available at an online-fulfillable location.

How to resolve it

For Notify Me to be able to send out notifications for these products, you will need to move stock to a location that can fulfill online orders:

  1. In Shopify, go to Products → [Product] → Inventory

  2. Click Edit locations

  3. Deselect any non-fulfillable or offline locations

  4. Select a fulfillable (online) location

  5. Click Save

If you need to physically transfer stock between locations, use Products → Transfers in Shopify. Notify Me will automatically detect the update and send alerts to customers who requested them.
